Child and Adolescent Interest Section Representative
Jessica Beal Korhonen, Psy.D.

The Child and Adolescent Section is a special interest section that promotes initiatives for providers who focus on children and adolescents in their practice and in academia.  The primary aims of this section are to address the interests of child and adolescent psychologists and to provide a medium for mutual support among colleagues.  The section’s representative holds a voting position on the Board of Directors.  KPA members can join the section by selecting the Child and Adolescent Interest Section option through the online KPA member profile.  The section welcomes members with new ideas and those interested in carrying out activities of the section. 

Clinical Interest Section Representative

The Clinical Section Interest Group has been set up to serve practitioners across the state.  Largely, the section functions via its listserv, which allows members to seek referral information, discuss relevant current events in the field and stay connected to their practitioner colleagues.  The section’s representative holds a voting position on the Board of Directors.  An informal gathering is scheduled for Clinical Section Interest Group members at the 2010 Annual Convention this year.  The section welcomes new members with an interest in clinical psychology to join by selecting the Clinical Psychology Interest Section option via the online KPA member profile.

Developmental Disabilities Representative *
Dee Werline, M.A.  (Term Expires:  12/31/2017)
The Developmental Disability Interest Section is for KPA members or graduate students who are engaged or interested in one or more of the following:

  • Providing direct psychological or behavior support services to Individuals with developmental disabilities and to their families.
  • Provide psychological or behavior support services to agencies who provide services to Individuals with a developmental disability and to their families.
  • Engage in research focusing on developmental disabilities.
  • Teach undergraduate or graduate courses in psychology or behavior support services.
  • Building community support for services to Individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.
  • Educating the public about developmental disabilities.
  • Advocating and supporting the role of psychologists in the provision of psychology and behavior support services to the citizens of Kentucky with developmental disabilities.

This is a new section.  Refinement and expansion of the focus of the Developmental Disabilities section will be an ongoing process and will be directed by the members of this section.

Education and Training Interest Section Representative

The Education and Training Interest Group (ETIG) is for KPA members who are involved with or interested in aspects of training and education.  Those with an interest in either/both graduate and undergraduate education as well as involved in the training of future professionals are invited to be a part of this group.   Current members include students, practicum supervisors, internship supervisors, professors/instructors, dissertation committee members, and those interested in ethical and professional issues around training.  We are an inclusive group that utilizes a listserv to share ideas.  Currently, the group has board representation within KPA.

Equine and Other Animal Facilitated Therapeutic Practices *Non-Voting seat

This interest section is for mental health professionals, practitioners, or students who are using, considering using, or just curious about the practice of using animals to help people with mental health problems.  This is an inclusive group, whether you are interested in EAGALA, PATH, E3A, Emotional Therapy Animals, Medical Service Animals, Search and Rescue Animals, etc.  Some people don’t know that Freud was not only the father of psychoanalysis, but also a pioneer of animal assisted psychotherapy.  He often had his Chow with him in his office because he found his dog helped calm his patients and encouraged them to be more open during the therapy session.  The purpose of this interest section is to share information, network, socialize, and promote the use of animals in therapeutic practices.

Forensic Interest Section Representative *Non- Voting seat

The Forensic Section Interest Section is for those KPA members who are actively involved with or interested in the field of forensic psychology.  The primary purpose of the section is to facilitate discussion, professional networking, and ongoing education among colleagues who share an interest in the diverse field of forensic psychology.  The listserv is the primary vehicle through which members communicate.  Informal meetings are periodically held and a CE offering is scheduled for members at the KPA annual convention.  The section welcomes new members with clinical or academic interest in forensic psychology to join by selecting the Forensic Psychology Interest Section option on the online KPA member profile. 

Health Psychology Section Representative

The Health Psychology Section is for KPA members with an interest in or working in the field of health psychology.  The purpose of this section is to provide a forum for discussion, education, and networking among colleagues with shared interests in health psychology.  Members utilize a listserv for discussion of relevant topics and current events, referral information, and support.  Informal meetings are held periodically for discussion and networking, and a CE offering is scheduled for members at the annual convention.  The section's representative holds a board voting position within KPA.  Current members of the section include practitioners, academic researchers and professors, and students.  The section welcomes new members with an interest in health psychology to join by selecting the Health Psychology Interest Section option via the online KPA member profile.

The Science and Research Section is for KPA members interested in the world of research. This section seeks to represent the contributions and needs of science and research-focused KPA members, but is open to any interested KPA member. Section members constitute a diverse community of psychologists who may or may not be actively involved in conducting research and includes individuals working in both the private and public sectors (academic and non-academic). The section has a KPA-based listserv that is used for communications among section members. Please feel free to contact the representative if you have any questions about the science and research section or if you would like make a suggestion regarding section activities.
